New interface and advanced call rules allow flexible configuration of users’ extensions

Fonality to Extend HUD to Call Centers and Conference Calling

One of the coolest benefits IP PBXes can bring users is the ability to deal with calls via their computer screens. Instead of pressing a sequence of keys and then an extension number to transfer a call, for example, users can simply drag the image representing the call to a box representing the colleague. Open source IP PBX vendor Fonality Inc. has long offered such capability to regular callers via its so-called heads-up display, or HUD. Now it's extending HUD to an entirely new area: the call-center and conference-calling functions of its PBXtra and trixbox Pro products.

Fluke Buys Viola's Code

Got a Viola Networks' NetAlly box? If so, you'll want to know that Fluke Networks just bought Viola's intellectual property and source code. Note that the deal doesn't mean that Fluke bought the NetAlly products themselves — just the sauce that went into them. It's not clear what happens to Viola's customers in the deal; the price wasn't specified. The purchase is the latest in a string of VoIP-management deals from Fluke. The Hacking of US Department of Homeland Security’s Website Highlights Dangers

Most of the strong future growth in IP Phones will continue to come
from IP desk phones that will begin incorporating more features and
functionality, such as larger color displays, touch screens, and video
capabilities, as the cost to add these features declines and users
begin to expect their desk phones to have a feature set similar to
their cell phones, said Alan Weckel, Senior Analyst at Dell Oro Group.
Fortunately for the IP Phone market, most LAN switch deployments will
be voice ready during the next five years, eliminating the concern for
enterprises deploying voice. By 2012, there will be enough
infrastructure in place to support VoIP to every enterprise desktop,
Weckel added.
